Android, Cyanogen, the Google Experience, and the Economics of Open Source

Earlier this Google delivered a cease and desist letter to the developer of a popular Android ROM, Cyanogen.

It seems like the developer community at large has reacted with a very strong knee jerk reaction claiming the end for Google, and claiming that Google has become Apple. I can understand the reaction to the situation, but I don't think it is really appropriate or fair. Google has made a significant contributions to the Open Source world with Android. They also work to foster the developer community via Summer of Code.

This is what I figure is happening behind the scenes. Google licenses their applications as a part of the 'Google Experience' and works with carriers to develop proper handset environments. The 'Google Experience' gives carriers and handset manufacturers a competitive advantage in the market, giving the license value. When the 'Google Experience' can be had for free that value is lost.

Keep in mind that while Open Source itself is free, we live in a capitalist world. People need to acquire capital to get the resources to meet their needs. As an open source developer myself I charge for my time and work on a paid services model to generate revenue. Google is trying to license applications distributed for an Open Source platform.

Many people may disagree with the idea of a commercial product running on an Open Source operating system or framework, however it's territory that must be charted. There are many software companies that develop extremely high quality products, that require a large amount of resources to meet visual design, user experience research, development, marketing, and operations costs.

The open source operating system and desktop environments need these companies to view open source platforms as a viable delivery mechanism for their products if commercial operating systems are to be pushed to the way side.

Personally, I'd love to have Photoshop and Ableton Live on linux. Gimp does the job, but is not an equal. While there have been many efforts there are no linux music production tools that are as expressive as those available in the commercial world. (Not to knock any of you guys I think your work is great.)

Maybe the outrage should be refocused at the dominant economic system in play, instead of at the companies who are trying to make open source happen and provide resources to their employees so they can have a decent quality of life and pursue their dreams.

This is quite true. I agree with this. We benefit a lot from open source platforms. But we also have to take into account what the developers in these platforms get from us.
